Vienna, Austria

What better place to start my blog than the capital of my home country… Vienna, Austria? Vienna (German: Wien) has a big place in my heart. It’s the city of music, imperial traditions and stunning architecture. There’s something to experience for everyone! It doesn’t matter if you’re young, old, an adventurer, or someone who simply wants to experience the Viennese charm.

FACTS ABOUT VIENNA

Vienna is the capital city of Austria. With 1.9 million inhabitants it’s by far the biggest and most populated city in the country. The main language that is spoken is German. The Danube (German: Donau) is the second-longest river in Europe and cuts through the city.

WHAT TO DO IN VIENNA

If you like history and art, I would highly recommend visiting a museum. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Museum of Natural History (German: Naturhistorisches Museum)
  • Museum of Fine Arts (German: Kunsthistorisches Museum)
  • Albertina (art museum)
  • Belvedere (art museum)
  • Others: Sigmund Freud Museum, Museum of Military History

Usually, museums are open from 10a.m. to 6p.m. I would recommend only bringing a small bag because not all museums let you walk around with a big backpack. They don’t want you to accidentally bump into an art piece.

If you want to adore beautiful architecture, I would recommend visiting:

  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral
  • Schönbrunn Palace
  • Vienna State Opera
  • City Hall

I like to walk a lot when I’m visiting a new city. Vienna is a great place to do that because most things can be reached within minutes. If you prefer to use public transportation, then don’t worry. There is a subway and bus system that is easy to use and available to you for a reasonable price.

If you want to do something fun and exciting, here are my favorite things to do:

  • Prater (amusement park)
  • Renting a boat at the Danube
  • Treetop rope course Kahlenberg

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK IN VIENNA

  • Viennese cutlets (German: Wiener Schnitzel) and potato salad
  • Sachertorte – chocolate cake
  • Apple strudel (German: Apfelstrudel)
  • Melange – Viennese coffee
